I feel I must concede to your superior analysis of this event, its benefactors and beneficiaries, its economic sense and ethical values.
I shall attend tomorrows event and try and enjoy a few drinks with friends, watch some racing and the anticipated sunshine. Hopefully my day will not be destroyed by the overriding feeling of pointlessness of that which is going on around me.
Enjoy your weekend, whatever worthy and puposeful course it may take.

r7 You decided to enter a debate and then leave with patronising remarks rather than defending the points that you brought up, after having made it personal, might I add. It is like throwing the toys out of the pram. I am hoping you are from the queen's camp, otherwise you will be sorely disappointed if planning on meeting with your friends.

I have attempted to defend my points, apparently fruitlessly. We could go round in circles forever. I only leave the debate as I am little weary of it.

Its a fun day out, for God's sake. Rowing, sunshine, and a private match that really is no-one else's business!

Sponsorship is two way thing. If you want a sponsor to donate money to your club they will want a tangible benefit, i.e publicity, exposure etc. It also affords the University a good PR exercise and networking event to target other potential sources of revenue and corporate schmoozing. QUB boat club may not benefit directly from the event but they are funded partly by the University so it probably isn't particularly wise to bite the hand that feeds you. Sponsorship/fundraising is a necessary evil of the sport.

Except that Trinity won the senior womens race by 2 1/2 lengths!

Yeah I was also led to understand that the Queens crew, despite being primarily an inter crew, had seniors in the boat thereofre making it a senior crew.
Afloat you need to correct the fact that Trinity won the womens senior race and the distance

Thanks Afloat.
Ouch that bbc coverage is harsh. The man who caught the crab isn't going to be forgetting about that one any time soon.
