I just came across results for Strathclyde regatta and noticed that Carlow Rowing Club did very well winning various junior and senior events More significantly they seem to have put in fine performances in the Intermediate 8's and 4's (Mens Restricted 2?..can anyone shed any light on what grade this would fall under in Ireland) and the Senior 4x taking 1st place in all 3. They also came second in the Mens 8 (I presume senior), 7 seconds off the winner but the closest crew behind them was 10 seconds adrift. So very promising performance from them. Carlow haven't shown themselves on the domestic regatta scene this season but obviously they have a very fast squad. As defending champions they will be considered one of the favorites for the senior 4x in September but in terms of the 8 and 4, given that performance, they should be considered a top contender to pick up an Intermediate Pot this season?? Also judging by the IARU post they intend on sending crews to Marlow and Henley so they must expect something good from them. www.scottish-rowing.org.uk/applets/10SPR_Results.pdf

"but in terms of the 8 and 4, given that performance, they should be considered a top contender to pick up an Intermediate Pot this season??" The restricted 2 eight won with a time of 6.40, not really that great when you compare it to neptune's 6.30 at skib regatta, or queens sub 6 min time at the british uni champs. I understand that it's difficult to compare times with races in different conditions, but 40 secs is a big gap! Scottish rowing is pretty poor, I was at the same regatta a few years back and was under no illusion that i was any good even though we won nearly every event we entered. I would call it pot hunting if i hadn't have done the same!!

The conditions must have been bad - times across the board in all events weren't great at all.

Both points taken, perhaps the standard of rowing in Scotland is not top quality but at the end of the day you go out and beat whats there but looking at the times they were significantly faster than their opponents in the events which they won and as Old Reliable said times across the board were quite slow.
Hopefully they will be entered in Cork and we can see how they fare against the likes of UL, Galway and the rest.

Interesting to see that ex-Offaly oarsmen Ciaran Brady and Adam O'Donoghue were named in those winning Carlow crews in Strathclyde...

well done to em, always nice to win a few medals abroad! im sure theyll be no walkover in an inter 8 race at ireland but i dont think theyll be as fast as galway, neptune and queens..
actually on the topic of travelling, with grand league points very much sought after what happens if a foreign club competes? eg cork city regatta with uni london racing all senior sweep events, if they win do they still get the points or will the top amount of points be given the second??

you can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people, all of the time.
I'm fed up of of Irish crews hiding from each other and going to England to compete when theres plenty of good regattas in Ireland to have quality racing at.
Not too long ago, top senior and junior crews would follow each other around the country to have a right auld ding dong with each other, now their all hiding from each other till the champs.

True Reckthem, but thanks to the Internet we know that based on the weekends racing at Marlow ( www.themarlowregatta.com) Carlow are 3 or 4 secs slower than GRC, and the Queens boat (who have a lot of Inters in it) are faster again in the eight. Interesting to see if Queens have a fast Inter 8. The champs will be interesting too. I'd tip GRC to take it with Carlow and UL fighting out for second and third as it stands. GRC also went well in the Inter four at Marlow, but Neptune and UL should be strong there too and will try to challenge them. Carlow should come out with a strong quad for the second champs given the Offaly guys addition to the squad. Probably strong Inter and senior sculling small boats too.
