probably be a lot of staright boat finals but its better to have 8 lanes with an 8 boat straight final than 6 lanes with 2 semis of 4 boats with 3 qualifying and then a 6 boat final..
For junior 8s so far weve seen bann, bish, portora, pres, athlone, neptune and MCB and id say 4 maybe 5 most will race champs, the number is even lower on womens side
Inter 8s-Neptune,galway,ucd,queens,ul...more i guess??
anyways i ranted there point is yeh your right therll be alot of staright finals i would imagine...

well more clubs are deciding to focus on smaller boats rather than the larger ones, with the grand league points system encouraging this.

plus the fact that no one will get anywere near bann/bish in the junior 8's and queens are miles infront in the senior 8's.

Dunno about the Queen's comment - they are quick, but NUIG will not relinquish without a fight I suspect.
However, not what I intended to write about...
I wonder, despite the undoubted success of the Grand League series so far (congrats to the domestic events folk who brought it forward), I wonder if a little fine tuning might be in order, along the lined of what the Universities are now using.
For example - just one thought.........
Finishers from 6th to first 1x:............ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 2x, 2-.........2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 4+,4-,4x.... 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 8+..............5, 6, 7, 8, 9 ,10
.......or variants.....
In this way the club who can field the bigger boats gets a premium recognition for that.
Not suggesting a change for this year - but maybe a thought for next?

chocolate your attitude is a bit rubbish there are you suggesting no other boats should enter because bann/bish are so far ahead? if thats the case nobody should bother racing the 1x 2x and 4x because its fare to say there pretty much wrapped up too, always silver and bronze too!
And queens all be it very fast and doing well wont walk senior 8s nuig will give them a good race with a crew the likes of what they have.

sorry, i was simply saying i thought that was one of the reasons that there arnt many 8's this year bt when i think about it i agree that the quad double nd scull are equally as competitive. As regards to queens, i would be very surprised if they dont win by clear water.

anyone know if there are any pictures from the day going up on the wateredge or anywhere?have to disagree with you chocolate, queens have a lot to do before beating that nuig 8.. The two walls, olympian folan and almost olympian martin.. 4 strong other lads also.. Jnr 8s? Well im still waiting on that bish bann race. How far off nui were bish at cork? And how far were bann off queens at queens? Anyone know?

Don't rule out some strong composite coming out of the woodwork for the Senior 8, you don't know what will happen. Also in the Senior fours, Muckross gave NUIG a good run at Cork. I know it wasn't the NUIG first four, but Muckross didn't have Casey or Griffin in their four either, that could be a cracker of a race on championship day.

Nuig and queens have the same boat, nuig i would say are stronger and have better ergos and more experianced, queens might only have technique on them is all, its pretty even id say itll be a close one!

how much quicker do u think nuig are compared to last year? Havent a clue! different crew to an extent so ya cant reaqlly compare and contrast, same with queens crew. It all depends on henley i think which is quuens main goal, if they get an unlucky draw or have a bad race and get knocked out i wouldnt be surprised to see a division in the crew, very unlikely that'll happen but just another angle ya could look at it. Id say it'll be a repeat of last years senior 8s race if anything..

there is no doubt tho that queens are much faster this year, their recent preformances show that.

Queen's will win the senior 8's by open water as suggested by chocolate. NUIG last year edged out a strong queens crew using their race experience in the final metre of the race. This year Queens are faster, and have consistently shown with a 9th place at london head compared to last years 17th, and winning the british uni champs compared to 4th last year. NUIG have done their best to avoid racing queens this year in an attempt to cling on to the hope of winning senior 8's this year.
Queen's are a young crew (being comprised of students usually does that!) who are improving all the time, while NUIG are mostly older race veterans who are at or past their prime. They won't be getting any faster than last years crew, more likely they will be slower.
Are NUIG (or some other club that they kindly wish to represent!) attending Henley this year!?
