interesting that neptune are at the top, are they really that competitive this season?
the grand league is a breathe of fresh air for irish rowing, but i don't think that anyone is under the impression that winning it overall means anything. What do the winners get anyway?

Skibb are at the top, clearly they are competitive. Neptune are second, obviously improving after a few quiet seasons but still I can't see them picking up many/any pots in July.
Why does winning it not mean anything? Surely it is an indication of a clubs success. Victory in the GL will mean a lot to the club that wins it and you should not be quick to undermine that. Yes it is in its first season but I'm sure 5 years from now it will mean a lot and the club who wins the first GL will look back proudly as being the first club ever to have done so. The same can be said for the National Heads. Yes in its first year it is bound to be undermined but a few years down the line it will become a staple of the season and a proud moment for any oarsmen/club who wins one.
As for what the prize for the winning club is, I have no idea.

Afferentmayor, thats the attitude of a junior 12 - wheres the honour and pride gone from rowing? You can bet that the clubs that are at the upper end of the table take great pride in where they are and want to finish as high up the table for the clubs honour - while it might not be their main aim of the year a good standing in the table come years end shows the signs of a good vibrant healthy club and while they may not be the winners of the Senior 8's at the end of the season they can be proud of their achievements - theres too many mé feiners in rowing today who's only interest is their own crew - bring back a healthy club scene and success will follow

There is little honour or pride in winning a league by fielding LOTS of mediocre crews in as many events as possible. It is NOT an indication of success unless you are competing against the best crews in the country. Winning the grand league will be achieved by this shotgun approach, in other words it will be a hollow victory only percieved as honourable by the "victors".
Questioning what the winners of the league get was not an immature comment, if this league is to become a serious and coveted competition, then some incentives will be needed to lure the top class irish crews away from uk and european regattas and back here to make the grand league worth winning.
Honour and pride cannot be gained easily, and with the state of the league table at the moment, there is NO pride or honour in an EASY overall grand league title.

You are obviously speaking from a senior club who probably has no juniors - the aim of the League as I see it is to award a broad successful Club and I think Skibb are exactly that as leaders at present - should some of the categories be removed from the League? Probably. Should some form of weighted system favouring eights and so on be introduced. Probably. Should the best of 4 out of 6/7 events for a club count for scoring. Definitely. Will a club which focuses solely on big boats like a Uni ever win. Difficult but do-able. Hence the likes of Skibb, Neptune, Commercial deserve their place at the top for having good quality crews across a broad range of events. You ask above are Neptune competitive - Neptune have a good (not excellent) junior base at present, they have average seniors alright but success in Irish rowing is not all based around what the top senior boats are doing - in 5-7 years time Neptune might be back with a bang at senior level (I'm not from Neptune but do remember the days when the dominated Irish senior rowing for a long time) - Skibb are consistently there at all levels - maybe not senior 8's where your blinkers seemed to be focused on - remember its a club league and with some adjustements it will be beneficial to all involved
