Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Dublin Metropolitian Regatta Council have reduced the 2010 regatta to a one day event over 1,700 metres on Saturday 12th June.
The Saturday programme is now moved to Saturday morning with the Sunday programme moved to Saturday afternoon in line with the Grand League format as run in previous Grand League regattas. Crew withdrawals must be notified to the secretary before Friday 4th June ( this Friday ) at 5pm.

What a disaster, this has thrown the whole event in jeopardy, clubs have been banking on two good days racing, getting all crews out for the last major irish regatta before the champs. Now its a one day jam packed schedule and on a 1,700 course...........What the hell has gone wrong here...........

Is this for real or a stupid prank by someone. There is no offical post on the IARU and nor does there appear to have been any email to Captains or Secretarys.

It is true. I don't know why it has been cut to 1 day but just like a few years ago the water level is too low to row it over the full 2k.
I'm sure the metro committe didn't want to make this decision and I'm sure it was a decision made for the right reasons so clubs are just going to have to make do with it unfortunately.

Anyone know why? I am not looking to give a dig at the committee - i am sure the reasons were good or that they had no choice. Im just interested given my disappointment at what was going to be a great weekends racing.
At least there'll be a good bit of boozing then on saturday night!

If they run off the program as they say with the Saturday program moved to the morning and the Sunday program moved to the Saturday afternoon, does this not mean there will be no clashes or over-laps with the events you have entered? To be honest looking at some recent results I think Grand League points are the least of some peoples worries at the moment with Henley and the Championships just around the corner.

If the original programme was vast enough to need to be spread over 2 days, then I really doubt that cramming the whole lot into 1 day will run smoothly. And it really was the last time that a lot of crews will get a chance to blast out a 2k and see who their rivals are gonna be. It is a real pity, lots of winter events cancelled due to bad weather, now met is shortened due to good weather!

Have to agree with Old Reliable. It won't throw Metro into jeopardy. It has always been one of the biggest and best regatta's in the country. Ideally the full 2k would be great but it isn't like the course has been cut to 1k. You should still get a fairly decent look at where you stand over the 1700m course. Sure last year it was called off and it still got a big entry this year. As the notice says it is beyond their control so what else do you expect them to do? I presume it has just become a victim of nature. Be grateful for the days racing you are going to get. No other grand league has been run over 2 days and they have run smoothly enough so metro should be able to cope.
The only unfortunate thing is that some crews may have to be scratched because they no longer have the 2 days. This could particularly impact on people wishing to trial for the homes. But again it's not like the metro committee went out of their way to piss people off by doing this. It's not the first and it certainly won't be the last time that metro will have problems so everyone travelling to it is just going to have to make do and the notice indicates that crews are able to remove entries if they wish.

Its just disappointing really, its nobody's fault in particular. Im sure its the last thing the commitee wanted to do. The depth of water cannot be allowed for but the two day proposed schedule is something that potentially could have been kept. I would have to guess that the upcoming leaving and junior certs have alot to do with entries being down and possibly there were'nt enough crews to fill the junior events, thus leaving the commitee with no option but to cut the regatta to two days.
I would agree with 1,700 mtrs is still a decent test of where crews are at the moment, but people having intending to trial and possibly do 4's and 8's will have to re-jig there entries. At least its not called of like last year, it just seems we find it so hard to get a decent run of quality regatta's in ireland, its very hard to plan out your season when you cannot be sure an event is even going to go ahead. This is why we see many of our top crews race abroad, where they are guarranted consistently well ran regatta's, with top quality fields.
